Jewelry Staples

It's no secret that I love jewelry.  No outfit feels complete with at least one statement piece - whether it be a chunky necklace or a stack of arm candy.  The problem with most statement jewelry is that the styles change like the wind - so that beaded rosette necklace that you bought (in 8 different colors) last year is likely going to be replaced with something else in a season or two.

The trick with jewelry is knowing when to splurge.  So before I make a big jewelry purchase, I ask myself a few key questions.  If the answers are "yes", then I know the investment is a good one, and the cost per wear will be low:

1. Is it versatile?
Can it be dressed up or dressed down?  Can I wear it for work and play?  Can I pair it with my statement jewelry?
2. Is it neutral enough to wear with anything?
I love a pop of color just as much (if not more) than the next girl, but I try to stay away from high ticket items in bold colors.  Instead, I generally stick to metallics.  Both gold and silver work with every color of the rainbow.  Gold has made a huge comeback over the past few years - and personally I'm loving it!
3. Will I still be wearing it in 1, 5, 15 years?
The number of years really varies depending on the price of the item I'm considering.  If it's a big splurge, then I want to make sure it is a classic and timeless piece that I can see myself wearing 15 years down the road.

All of that being said, every girl needs at least a few classic jewelry pieces that will withstand the test of time.  Here are some of my favorite picks:

Neutral Watch

1 | 2 | 3
Nothing makes a statement quite like a nice watch.  I adore my gold Burberry watch and just know that I will wear it for years to come.  Michael Kors also has some great affordable options that are very trendy.  How fabulous is the gold and white watch for Spring and Summer?!

String of Pearls
1 | 2 | 3 | 4
Something about a string of pearls just exudes class - they are so timeless and elegant.  They are an investment piece but will never go out of style.  I got mine as a gift from my parents, and hope to someday have a daughter of my own to pass them on to.  If you're not quite ready to make the investment, try out freshwater pearls - just as classy and versatile at a fraction of the cost.

Diamond Studs
1 | 2 | 3
When it comes to fashion, there aren't many items you can guarantee will never go out of style.  Diamond studs are the exception.  Since the day I got mine, I've only ever taken them out to clean them.  They literally match with everything.  I am a fan of a classic solitaire because they are timeless, but the princess cut are really pretty as well and have more of a modern feel.

So tell me, what are your must-have "splurge" items?  Do you agree with my picks?

  3. Totally agree with all of your picks. I do have the pearls and studs already and even a couple of tennis bracelets and some dainty gold/platinum necklaces with diamonds. What I need to invest on is a nice, beautiful, designer watch. Love yours from Burberry. =)
