Pattern Mixing 101

Pattern Plan

Pattern mixing continues to big a hot trend - and it's no secret that I am all for it!  In fact, no outfit feels complete without at least 2 different patterns.  If you are new to pattern mixing, taking the first dive can be a little scary, so I've taken a little bit of the guesswork out of it and given you 3 looks to try using one of my favorite patterns to mix - polka dots.  This fun and flirty dress is the perfect canvas for a little pattern play.

1.  Subtle Pop of Leopard
Why it works:  It is easy to incorporate leopard into any outfit.  In look 1, I've kept it rather subtle, just adding a pop of leopard with the flats.  If you are scared to try out a bolder look, this is a great way to ease into the world of pattern mixing.

2.  Loud Leopard
Why it works:  When pattern mixing, it is a good rule of thumb to mix a larger print (the polka dots) with a smaller print (the leopard).  In this example, the leopard is tiny so it doesn't clash or compete with the larger polka dotted print.

3.  3 Patterns, 1 outift
Why it works:  Ready to go all out?  This outfit incorporates 3 classic patterns for a look that is anything but ordinary.  The clean lines of the plaid shirt just peaking out under the striped sweater offer the perfect contrast to the dots.  Keeping the pallet to mostly black and white, with just a few accent colors here and there, help to create one cohesive look.

So, what do you think?  Which outfit is your favorite?  Are you be bold enough to wear 3 (or more) patterns in one outfit?  And don't forget, you can click the items below to shop these looks.
